Fours Gold medalists heading to Canadian Championships

Category : News Item 2018

What a weather-varied tournament last weekend in Calgary!  Friday night we were delayed for a short time because of a nearby thunder and lightning storm.  Saturday we played in pouring rain until a delay was called because of near torrential rain fall that the greens couldn’t drain fast enough.  We continued playing in lighter rain conditions and finished off the day under some cloud and some sun.  Then on Sunday we baked a bit under the warmth of the sun and very few clouds.

The double round robin tournament between four teams for the women was won by the team of Jan Robinson, Peggy Plathan, Bev Robinson and Patricia Walker.  They played strong all weekend long and went through undefeated!  Alberta is proud to have this team represent us in Regina in August.

The 8 men’s fours teams that were registered played five preliminary random games followed by the 1st to 4th place teams competing in playoffs games. After a terrific and very close championship game the team of Roy Riege, Peter Mok, Paul Maskell and Mike O’Reilly came away with the Gold medal.  Mike will attend his first national championship along with a number of ‘veterans’  as this team is off to represent AB this August in Regina.  We expect a great showing from this team!

Youth going to Canadian Championships

Category : News Item 2018

This past weekend the Youth Tournament was held in Edmonton at the Highlands LBC.  A big thank you to the club for being great hosts and to all their volunteers that helped prepare refreshments, serve a lunch, prepare the greens each day, play the U25 players and mark the singles games.

U25 players, Jamie Scott and Andrew Mason got some great game experience playing three games on the Saturday.  As avid curlers, they are looking forward to their first Canadian experience in bowls.

One young junior boy, Andrew Davison, is off to the Youth Championships for the first time as well.  He hopes to gain some valuable experience at the tournament.

Three junior girls played off for medals in a double round robin tournament on Saturday and Sunday.  Kiera Schaelow took the gold, playing extremely well and consistently all weekend. She is off to the nationals for her second time. Alexis Gallacher took the silver, and after a fourth place finish at the nationals last year she is eager to see if she can improve on that this year.  New bowler, and another avid curler, Kyla Malcolm, received the bronze.  This will be her first time at the Youth Championships and she has shown great potential.

Accompanying the youth, along with their chaperones, will be AB Head coach, Derek Dillon and coach Cecilia Gillespie from Highlands.
